USF Nursing unveils SHINE Science Center to power discovery and innovation

The USF Health College of Nursing is proud to announce the opening of the , a cutting-edge shared resource center dedicated to advancing sleep research and its profound impact on health across the lifespan. Under the visionary leadership of Christina McCrae, PhD, DBSM, FSBSM, FAASM, the SHINE Science Center is poised to become a hub for transdisciplinary collaboration, fostering the dissemination of high-quality, rigorous, and innovative research in the field of sleep.

Sleep is a fundamental pillar of health, influencing every aspect of human life, from physical well-being to mental health. The SHINE Science Center will be at the forefront of exploring these connections, offering state-of-the-art equipment, comprehensive training, and support for both undergraduate and graduate research assistants. Through various educational programs, the center aims to cultivate the next generation of sleep scientists, equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to advance healthcare, patient-outcomes and research.

McCrae, director of the , and a renowned expert in behavioral sleep medicine, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her role as the center's director. Her dedication to improving sleep health through research and education aligns perfectly with the mission of the SHINE Science Center. "Sleep is a crucial determinant of health, and through the SHINE Science Center," said McCrae, "we have the opportunity to make significant strides in understanding and improving sleep across all stages of life."

The SHINE Science Center founding leadership team also includes Assistant Director Ashley Curtis, assistant professor and director of the ; and Recruitment Coordinator Melanie Stearns, assistant professor and director of the . 

The SHINE Science Center will serve as a collaborative environment where researchers from diverse disciplines can come together to explore the complexities of sleep. The center's resources will be available to faculty and students across USF, promoting an inclusive and supportive atmosphere for groundbreaking research. From cutting-edge technology to hands-on training, the SHINE Science Center is equipped to support a wide range of research endeavors, ensuring that USF remains at the forefront of sleep science.
