Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Science Education
USF’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Science Education is designed for individuals with a bachelor’s degree outside of education who want to become certified middle or high school science teachers. ºÚÁÏÉç choose a concentration in Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Space Science, or Physics and receive strong preparation through coursework, clinical experiences, and internship placements. Graduates are eligible for Florida teacher certification in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, with embedded ESOL and Reading Endorsements upon passing the FTCE.
What you will learn
ºÚÁÏÉç learn how to teach rigorous, hands-on science content using research-based instructional strategies that support diverse learners. The program prepares future teachers to design engaging lessons, analyze student data, create safe and supportive learning environments, and integrate technology effectively. Through internship experiences, students apply their content knowledge in real classrooms while receiving mentorship from experienced secondary science teachers.

What to Expect
ºÚÁÏÉç complete coursework aligned with their chosen science discipline and participate in part-time and full-time internships in middle or high school classrooms. All internships occur in the student’s certification area and require passing scores on the relevant FTCE subject area exam. Practicing teachers take a minimum of 3 internship credits; all other students complete 6 credits.
